Spontaneity is a funny thing, a romantic notion of going where your heart tells you. Today a close friend of mine told me he was terrified of missing opportunities and that he was afraid that if he stuck to a plan in life he would end up missing out on bigger and better things. And to be honest I have to agree.

Sometimes it’s hard to remember that there is so much happening in the world outside of our own self made bubbles, so many other people living their own lives, bouncing off of others, and so much beauty in both the natural world around us and the numerous collection of stories each and every person holds.

Though it may seem like a very romanticized and not a very practical idea to live a life of spontaneity, it doesn’t take much to make a snap decision. Some of my most treasured memories are of moments where without thinking I’ve said yes to little somethings – for instance waking up just those couple of hours earlier so that I can watch the sunrise, or instead of hiding from the rain under coats and umbrellas allowing myself to enjoy it, feeling the rain drops hit my face and watching the sky change into a million shades of grey.

I’m not trying to tell you to go out there and change your entire life, instead i’m asking you to stop for one moment and look around. But really look. Look at the world going by, the beauty of it all, and think about those little moments, the little decisions of the day to day. Maybe take that route home that’s a little longer but lets you enjoy the walk, or maybe take you’re headphones out and listen to the noise around you.

Too often we forget about these little moments, the little moments that make us human and show us what life truly can be. So look up from your smart phone, or your laptop screen and look at the world outside the window. There is so much to life, to learn, to see and to hear, and it really doesn’t take much to be aware of it all.


Music, it’s a powerful thing and we are constantly surrounded by it each day. Whether it’s a jingle on TV you’ve heard a thousand times, or a powerful ballad that you’ve discovered within the depths of Spotify, music without a doubt can have the power to change how we feel.

Companies can be clever and use it within advertisement, drumming that catchy tune into your brain so you think of their product more often and are therefore more likely to buy it. But there are the artists who have created songs for every mood possible, with many people finding comfort in songs that can relate to a situation in their own lives.

But there’s also a power in creating music yourself, I’ve played the piano since a young age and though not everyone may be able to relate to this, sitting down at the keys and focusing only on the sound you are producing is one of the most difficult things to describe but i’ll do my best to try. Imagine, sitting at the piano, the window is open and its raining outside, a cool breeze floats into the room and the gentle tapping of the rain on the window adds to the smooth playing of a piece of Einaudi (For those who don’t know who this is he is a minimalist pianist, and I highly recommend listening to the song I Giorni or Nefeli).

For me personally it instantly improves my day, being able to pour in the emotions you’ve collected throughout the day, week or month, into your music is uplifting and quite frankly therapeutic.

The inspiration for this post has come from my discovery of the artist Matt Maltese, who is most definitely one of those singers that makes music that requires you to really sit and listen to what he is saying, listen to the messages his songs are conveying. Of course he is not the only artist that makes music like this, and I couldn’t tell you what draws me to this kind of music but there’s something about songs such as ‘Even if it’s a Lie’ by Maltese, ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon and ‘Fast Car’ by Tracy Chapman, that stop me in my tracks and make me listen to every lyric.

Of course this is different for everybody and the beautiful thing about music is that it is interpreted differently by everyone. For example the song ‘Half the World Away’ by Oasis, those listening to it may imagine the song to be about various different people, maybe considering the song when they listen to it, to be about themselves or about a particular person in their life. This goes for music genres as well, some people find rap to be a good way to belt out emotion where as another may not enjoy it as much and prefer something more traditional such as classical music. It depends on what kind of person you are, and to link this blog post to my previous it really shows just how diverse the human population is.



Mental Health

Yesterday the news that Chester Bennington the lead singer of the band Linkin Park, committed suicide – shocking many fans. And as tragic as his death was it’s sparked a rush of awareness for mental health across social media.

Many people that I know struggle in some way with mental health, for the sake of their privacy I will not use names, but one thing I have noticed is that whether it is a long term battle with depression and anxiety or smaller periods of time of feeling low you don’t really know how seriously low someone can be. And sometimes though we may hate to admit it, it can be extremely difficult to help someone if you don’t understand what it is they are going through.

I have times where I find it difficult to cope with situations, but my brother, dad and step mum also struggle too, and I’m sure many other members of my family have had times or maybe even have had a long term battle with some form of mental health illness, that I don’t even know about.

And though as a society we’ve taken more steps to become accepting of these disorders, there is still not enough awareness and more needs to be done. There are not nearly enough places for young people to go and talk about issues they may be feeling, and too often the attitude of “Oh don’t be so dramatic.” comes into play.

Mental health is not a choice, people do not choose to fight with the demons in their heads, as a society surely we can be better? Surely we can offer help to these people, instead of diminishing their problems to nothing?
